Why Do Roofing Shingles Crack?

December 21, 2011

It is a common sight; cracked shingles! But why do shingles crack?

Asphalt shingles, both organic and fiberglass, are subject to considerable stress from extreme temperature variations and roof deck movement.

Snow pack, extreme wind, direct sunlight, and heat. These are factors that cause your shingles to expand and contract. They also cause your roof deck to do the same.

It is THIS stress that may cause a shingle to crack, tear, split or “fish mouth”.

The other factor in why shingles would crack, is the human factor; as in, poor installation. A roof is an investment in your greatest asset. Think of it like the quality of school you would send your child to. You send them to a school without checking the school’s reputation; you’re likely going to receive poor results. The same is true of your roofing contractor.
