Does The Weight Of The Roofing Shingle Matter?

December 21, 2011

When you step into a roofing showroom, such as Affordable Quality Roofing’s showroom in North Vancouver, you may be overwhelmed with the number of roofing shingle materials available.

There are seemingly hundreds of roofing shingle options. And we’re not just talking colour options.

One of the most common questions we get is; “does the weight of the shingle matter”?

In short: yes!

The weight is of course dependent on the makeup of the shingle. More stones and more asphalt mean a heavier shingle. But more importantly, more stones and more asphalt also mean a heavier or thicker layer of protection for your home, and also a greater life expectancy than a lighter shingle.

Sure, a heavier shingle may cost more, but on average they would only cost 10-15% more, but give you up to 30% extra life-expectancy. So the real question is, how long do you intend to remain in your home? That may help you answer the age-old question: what shingle weight do I need?
