There are two different roofing shingle technologies common in Vancouver:
Duroid Asphalt Shingles and Laminated Fiberglass Roofing Shingles.
Duroid Asphalt Shingles have a base of core organic felt, which is a wood and paper based product. They are then covered with asphalt granules, which tend to absorb moisture and eventually curl.
Laminated Fiberglass Roofing Shingles on the other hand, have a base core of fiberglass roof mat. This mat is covered with asphalt granules. Because the fiberglass roof core has superior strength and does not absorb moisture, there is no curling effect

Fiberglass roofing shingles (also commonly called Laminated shingles) are the most popular type of roofing shingle available today. And for good reason, Laminate shingles are aesthetically pleasing.
However, did you know that the majority of houses with laminate shingles have been installed incorrectly!
Why? Because laminated shingles have traditionally provided the roofing contractor with a very small area in which the fasteners must be placed. An average house requires over 6,000 fasteners to install the roof. Correct placement of SO MANY fasteners in such a small area is extremely difficult and statistically unlikely.
Further, most roofing contractors are paid piecework rates based on the number of shingles installed. Our experience has found that the combination of these factors has resulted in the majority of laminated roofs not being installed correctly.

Malarkey fiberglass roof shingles avoid “troughing”, preventing water from running sideways, which cause leaks. “Blow-back leaks” are cause when the rain seal is breached, causing leaks. Malarkey addressed this problem by increasing the size of the overlap area and adding a second rain seal line for increased protection, in fact, twice the protection of all other laminated shingles!
